Is relative grading better than absolute grading?

I think it may depend a lot on what class is being taught, at what level, and who the students are.

I think relative grading (grading on a normal curve) can lead to grade inflation; even if every student in the class does very poorly and puts forth no effort, there is still going to be someone who gets an A. Vice versa: even if everyone in the class does *very well*, somebody still ends up with a poor grade to satisfy the normal distribution.

ok; with conditions that
1- nobody below a 40% will pass
2- not more than 10% o a class will get A's
does that sound better?
assumption: a fac mem will make a paper in which most of the results
are in mu-sigma,mu+sigma
