The Position:

THE POSITION

Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor/Counselor, Disability Support Programs & Services (DSPS) in Continuing Education. There are six Continuing Education campuses within the San Diego Community College District, each serving a diverse student population in a variety of non-credit career, technical and basic skills classes. Applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. In addition, this pool may be used to fill vacancies that may occur during the next academic year.

Under the direction of the Dean of DSPS, the incumbent will be responsible for the provision of counseling and support services to students with disabilities enrolled in Continuing Education, and maintaining compliance with Title V, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA).

Major Responsibilities:

Provide vocational, academic and disability related counseling to students with disabilities to include initial intake interview, general assessment, advisement, registration assistance, collection of verification documentation and maintenance of student files.
Facilitate provision of support services and accommodations, i.e., access technology, adaptive equipment, sign language interpreting, STS, liaison with faculty, testing accommodations, etc.
Develop and/or monitor Academic Accommodation Plans (AAP) and utilize information to assist students in meeting their goals.
Maintain liaison with educational and community-based organizations for ongoing referral, outreach and recruitment.
Provide consultation and support to faculty, staff and administration regarding student issues, educational programs and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Travel to various district sites and programs to meet students and faculty as necessary.
Effectively utilize technology in the workplace, i.e., email, data bases, and document creation.
Represent DSPS at professional conferences, meetings and district committee assignments.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
Masters, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, or rehabilitation counseling;
AND
15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in
deaf and hearing impaired.

Desired Qualifications:

The successful candidate shall have demonstrated:
1. Experience providing individual, academic and vocational counseling with students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting.
2. Experience providing access and determining appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.
3. Ability to establish and maintain collegial and cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and administration.
4. Ability to facilitate access to appropriate community resources.
5. Ability to maintain student records in compliance with legal requirements.
6. Experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
7. Effective written communication skills.
8. Extensive experience working with and providing accommodations, academic adjustments and auxiliary aids to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
9. Fluency in American Sign Language.

Licenses:

Pay Information:

Class 0, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,421.66 $7,677.65) per month based on the current AFT Continuing Education Faculty Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Adult Instructor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Adult Instructors earn tenure after 4 years.
