JOB DESCRIPTION

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

 

Adjunct faculty teach department courses on a part-time basis and evaluate student performance pursuant to guidelines set by the department and the College.  Adjunct faculty report to the Department Chair for their discipline. Adjunct faculty are responsible for preparing lesson plans, teaching aids, and instructional materials or activities for class. Adjunct faculty must maintain accurate records on students and submit pertinent data to the department and/or the College.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Candidates must be able to demonstrate awareness and sensitivity towards promoting an inclusive and diverse learning environment. Good knowledge of field of specialization; knowledge of or experience in implementing a variety of teaching strategies; awareness of the value of technology as a tool for teaching; experience with computerized student record management; ability to develop educational programs; ability to teach effectively at the college level; initiative and resourcefulness; industrious and dependable; ability to get along well with others; effective communication skills; experience teaching a diverse student body; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor's Degree in area of specialization plus 30 hours of appropriate advanced study. Must have had courses in educational methodology, three (3) years clinical experience with periodontal emphasis, NYS Dental Hygiene License, BLS certificate.

FOR DDS or DMD SUPERVISING POSITION ONLY:

 

The supervising teaching clinic dentists will be available for consultation, diagnosis and referral recommendations as needed during student treatment of patients. The supervising dentist will remain available in the clinic for the entire clinic session and until all patients have been dismissed. General or personal supervision is provided as appropriate during clinic sessions as required by the state dental practice act.

Responsibilities of the supervising dentists may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1.    Evaluates significant medical history findings and discusses with student and faculty any necessary treatment modifications.

2.    Recommends medical consultation prior to continued treatment in the clinic.

3.    Diagnoses abnormal findings documented during extra-oral and intra-oral examination.

4.    Evaluates unusual findings on dental radiographic images and performs intraoral dental examination.

5.    Approves radiographs not consistent with the recommended guidelines.

6.    Evaluates possible carious tooth structure prior to application of pit and fissure sealants.

7.    Evaluates concerns requested by faculty.

8.    Provides other necessary recommendations for care.

9.    Refers patients for any additional treatment needs.

10.   Administers local anesthesia as needed; documents anesthesia used, quantity and injection sites.

11.   At the dentist discretion, in limited situations provides a prescription and referral if necessary.

12.   Recements temporary crown(s) and places temporary restoration(s) removed/dislodged during treatment. NOTE: Dental emergency visits are not a responsibility of the supervising dentist.
