Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE, (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Instructor of Biology, (Cell Biology) in the Division of Math, Science and Engineering located at Evergreen Valley College.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.
This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach a 100% load in the field of Biology. The teaching assignment will primarily be in the general principles and cell biology and general biology courses, and other biology courses to fit the needs of the department.

2. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

3. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

4. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

5. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

6. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

7. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

8. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

9. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

10. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

11. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Masters in any Biological Science

OR

Bachelors in any Biological Science

AND

Masters in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Marine Science

OR

*The equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

1. Strong academic background in Biology, with emphasis in Cell Biology, including a diversity of current laboratory techniques and protocols.

2. Experience using current evidence-based pedagogy with online and hybrid teaching modalities using Learning Management Systems (Canvas preferred), with evidence of formal training in online teaching.

3. Experience teaching college-level Biology courses with a hands-on lab component to students of a diverse background exemplifying a pedagogy shown to improve inclusion, access, and success. Experience developing course curriculum and assessment including hands-on laboratory exercises that achieve current standards while working within the departmental budget.

4. Research or industry work in the field of biology, preferably including grant writing.

5. Experience working with colleagues of other disciplines to develop courses and/or programs that meet current and evolving needs in the field.

6. Experience with activities common in academic departments such as data gathering/reporting, participation on hiring committees, associate faculty mentorship/training, strategic planning, and department program review.

7. Experience developing and analyzing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and using that analysis to improve pedagogy, or experience analyzing student performance in achieving goals or outcomes.

8. Experience with activities common at the CA community college level including committee work, guided pathway development, communicating and coordinating with affinity groups and disability support programs, and ongoing professional development, including professional development in current science education best practices.

9. Adheres to the departmental laboratory safety protocols, including CDC recommendations for COVID-19 and knowledge of SJECCD pandemic guidelines for teaching in the district.

10. Although Cell Biology will be the primary assignment, there may be opportunities to teach other courses in the biology department. After reviewing the courses we offer, please indicate in your cover letter which of these courses you feel you are qualified to teach with a statement describing those academic and/or experience-based qualifications.

Salary Range:
$89,273 to $122,546 Entry Level Annual Salary (10 Month, Academic Salary Schedule 2023-2024); Maximum Salary Potential $159,001. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
