* Job Description:*
The Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (NHS) is responsible for overseeing the teaching, research and operational activities of the departments of Allied Health Science, Mortuary Science, Nursing and Health/Physical Education/Recreation. The Dean assumes overall supervisory responsibility for the academic, personnel and fiscal affairs of these departments through the maintenance of regular and direct communication with the area department chairs. The Dean works collaboratively with the chairs to ensure relevance and quality of the curriculum and instruction; to propose and develop new academic programs in response to identified community needs; to develop and lead initiatives that advance professional growth and scholarship among faculty, especially those that foster innovative teaching and enhance student learning; to monitor and improve the performance of area departments, including especially the assessment of student learning.

The Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Services will:

Advise the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) on matters pertaining to Nursing and Health Sciences and on other matters as requested
Advise Assessment Coordinator on Nursing and Health Sciences assessment matters
Review approval requests for modification of student academic requirements, upon recommendation of area departments
Assist students by serving as person of final resort with respect to difficulties encountered by students requiring application of appropriate College's academic policies
Participate in and facilitate the work of College Committees, as the assigned representative of the College Administration
Monitor the alignment of Nursing and Health Sciences department programs and activities with the College Mission and in compliance with general college policy
Advise the VPAA on matters pertaining to the operations of area departments and on other matters, as requested
Participate in, facilitate in, and monitor academic departments through all assessment processes, including departmental self-study and program review
Review Department year-end reports and generate Dean's Summary report
Review and approve department requests for personnel, resources and new program and course proposals, grounding those decisions in assessment results and other data
Approve and monitor department budgets and purchases
Work with chairs, registrar, and advisement to ensure appropriate scheduling and availability of classes, review and approve department course schedules and cancellations each semester
Review and approve reassigned time and coordinators' requests, faculty schedules, adjunct contracts, and faculty Year-End Evaluation forms, providing Dean's comments where appropriate
Conduct classroom observations
Participate in new faculty orientation
Ongoing supervision of departmental faculty qualifications
Ensure departmental adherence to appropriate disciplinary procedure for both full-time and adjunct faculty and participate as required in grievance procedures
Supervise department chairpersons



Requirements:
Master's Degree required in a related discipline; Doctorate preferred; minimum of ten years of experience in higher education primarily involved in teaching and learning. Previous experience with course and program assessment preferred. Demonstrated experience in administration and/or organizational leadership, and/or directing institutional initiative or programs is required.

Additional requirements include:

Familiarity with the mission, goals and objectives of the community college and the demographics of the student body of Nassau Community College (NCC)

Familiarity with best practices in community college education

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Knowledge of educational theories, practices and issues necessary for effective leadership of the faculty of the designated departments

Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative assessment utilized in the evaluation of courses and programs

Leadership skills in program development and instructional innovation to advance the mission of the program

Familiarity with the research process and the application in higher education

Familiarity with current instruction technology

Appropriate computer skills necessary for the effective analysis and communication of data relevant to the needs of area departments

Familiarity with distance education

Have a thorough understanding of faculty collective bargaining agreements and its application to the operation in an academic department


Additional Information:
The Dean reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs who may assign additional responsibilities to the Dean as necessary for the effective administration of the area.
