SAN JOSE/EVERGREEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Student Accessibility Services Counselor/LD Specialist (Part-Time/Adjunct)
The San Jose/Evergreen Community College District is seeking a part-time/adjunct Student Accessibility Services Counselor/LD Specialist for the Fall 24 semester with the possibility for rehire in the 2024-2025 academic year. Assignment is to be performed in person at San Jose City College.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Accessibility Services, the associate SAS Counselor/LD Specialist is responsible for the provision of learning disability assessment for eligible SJCC students. The focus of this position is to administer and interpret cognitive assessment with the purpose of identifying whether a student is considered learning disabled as defined by the California Community College's Title V regulations as well as to determine appropriate accommodations when applicable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer and interpret cognitive assessment with the purpose of identifying whether a client is considered learning disabled as defined by the California Community College's Title V regulations;
- Score and interpret assessment findings;
- Identify whether participant qualifies as an individual with a learning disability as defined section 56036 of the California Community College's Title V regulations;
- Evaluate student's areas of strengths and weaknesses;
- Discuss assessment findings with student and provide recommendations for appropriate accommodations;
- Maintain assessment records for completed assessment services;
- Develop and revise Academic Accommodation Plans (AAP) and Student Educational Plans;
- Assist students with learning disabilities with the completion of matriculation services including, but not limited to, outreach and recruitment, admissions, financial aid and scholarship, orientation, self-guided placement, course registration, and fee payment;
- Complete Counselor initiated or involved college documentation including, but not limited to, excess units, prerequisite petitions, dismissal/probation, transfer, and graduation and certificate petitions;
- Assist students with four-year university admission applications and related documentation;
- Assist students with basic needs and service referrals on and off-campus;
- Assist students with the completion of disability related documentation to meet eligibility criteria for program participation and compliance;
- Assist with the collection and analysis of data for program reporting for compliance and assessment for continuous improvement.
- Work with College personnel to ensure the provisioning of accommodations for students with disabilities;
- Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic, and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others;
- Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.
- Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g., grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions;
- Foster a professional work and learning environment.
Minimum Qualifications: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR Master's degree in Counseling, Guidance Counseling, Student Personnel, Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Education Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; OR (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.
AND
2. Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include, but not limited to adult cognitive and achievement assessment or the equivalent.
Demonstrated sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic, and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others;
Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to adapt strategies and techniques to different student abilities, learning styles.
- Completion of the California Community College Chancellor's office "Learning Disability Eligibility Model Training"
