Student Services Technician - Military Base

The Position:

Applications are currently being accepted for two (2) Student Services Technicians-Military Base (SST) at San Diego City College. San Diego City College provides selected courses and on-base programs at Naval Base San Diego and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Most of the assigned hours of work will be performed at the military installations. Selected candidates must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs.

Please note that an employee may be transferred to any site at the option of the Chancellor.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the SST serves as the primary and independent point of contact, spokesperson, and advocate for the Naval Base San Diego and/or Marine Corps Recruit Depot programs and coursed offered at each location. The SST provides student success and support services to prospective, current, veteran, and military students.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Serve as liaison between student, the college and the military installations; assist students, with guidance from counselors, with the selection of courses and programs; serve as point-of-contact, spokesperson and advocate to resolve and coordinate enrollment, residency, counseling, and tuition assistance issues.

2. Perform complex and specialized technical, administrative, and clerical duties; provide admissions, academic financial aid and career related information and assistance to students.

3. Assist students, in consultation with a college counselor, with the application and compilation of multiple college credits earned from the both military nontraditional and traditional course work toward degree completion with the District; provide advice and interpretation of college catalog requirements students at military installations.

4. Follow up on the enrollment process with students; facilitate the collection of required admissions documents, transcripts, military tuition assistance financial aid packages, assessment examinations, state residency validation forms, and active duty non-resident fee waiver certification forms.

5. Provide assistance in the coordination of logistical support for on-base classrooms, offices, and events; provide on-base instructors with information and class briefings; and provide support to the Director, Off-Campus Programs with the scheduling of classes.

6. Assist with the distribution of surveys and compilation of enrollment data.

7. Assist with the promotion of San Diego City College courses and programs offered at military installations; assist in the preparation and distribution of publicity, including the college catalog, class schedules and announcements to Naval Base San Diego and/or Marine Corps Recruit Depot personnel, on-base military student resource centers and on-base libraries; provide administrative support and determine the needs of the program.

8. Provide outreach services and on-site customer service to students.

9. Represent the college at on-base briefings, meetings, workshops, events, and education/career fairs for active duty service members on military installations in the service area.

10. Administer assessment and course placement tests to students at military installations.

11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other campus units, assigned faculty and military installation education services personnel.

12. Provide a wide range of information to students, faculty, staff, agencies, and the public regarding City College's on-base program offerings and its impact on District mission and goals; explain program and District policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

13. Prepare, manage and analyze information, reports, data and databases.

14. Use modern office tools to deliver services, including hardware and software.

1. Demonstrated experience in, and knowledge of, student success &
support and student equity program services.

2. Demonstrated ability to provide administrative support services in a military environment.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to interpret, applicable college, District, federal, state and local policies, guidelines and regulations.

4. Demonstrated ability to provide assistance with the evaluation of military earned education credit through non-traditional training courses and service schools.

5. Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret military and veteran educational benefits.

6. Demonstrated ability to research and solve problems.

7. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using technology, including a student information system, to deliver student success and support or similar services.

8. Demonstrated knowledge of the college and District mission and objectives.

9. Demonstrated knowledge of student support services that support veterans and military students.

10. Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.

11. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain statistical reports and records.

12. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

13. Demonstrated evidence of cultural competency and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years of increasingly responsible experience in a college or District-level admission and record office involving interpretation and application of rules and regulations.


Pay Information:

Range 23 ($3,584.18 $5,721.16) per month based on the current AFT Classified Unit Office Technical Salary Schedule

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Classified Staff Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is FLSA Non-Exempt and may accrue overtime. A temporary probationary period will be applied to the employee entering this assignment.
