Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Dean of Humanities, the incumbent would be a member of the English department teaching primarily developmental and transfer-level English composition courses with opportunities to join departmental rotations for literature and creative writing courses, serving on and/or chairing department and campus committees, maintaining appropriate records and reports, and participating actively in the work of the department, college and district. The college encourages and supports professional growth, expecting the successful candidate to demonstrate career objectives consistent with the mission of the college.

Qualifications:

Masters in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
OR
the equivalent.
NOTE: All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions, unless otherwise specified.

Desired Qualifications:

Evidence of recent ability to teach and evaluate students in all levels of college composition, developmental through transfer.

Commitment to the community college mission.

Training in composition theory/pedagogy.

Ability and willingness to use instructional research as the basis for innovation in the classroom.

Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Effective classroom presentation skills.

Ability to integrate effectively the use of current technology in teaching composition.

Organization and leadership skills, and an ability to work with a diverse faculty and staff, both within the department and college-wide.

A commitment to actively participating in furthering the work of the department and college outside of the classroom through committees, work groups, and other department college, and district-wide opportunities.

Commitment to continued professional growth and/or currency in the discipline.

Demonstrated study of literature and of the English language in terms of linguistics and/or grammar.

Commitment to creating equitable learning opportunities for students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural or ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities, as well as foster youth, returning students, veterans, and other underrepresented populations.

Licenses:

Pay Information:

Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,697.94 $7,677.65) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
