Definition

Orange Coast College is currently seeking one full-time tenure track Engineering instructor commencing in Fall 2017.  The primary teaching assignment involves academic transfer courses in Engineering.  This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.  The current emphasis on workforce development in the California Community Colleges (http://doingwhatmatters.cccco.edu/StrongWorkforce.aspx) and goal of serving industry partners through our programs opens the potential for curriculum growth in career and technical education in the field of Engineering.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed.  The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of Engineering and career development programs.
Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

  1. Provide instruction in engineering in the full range of courses in the community college level Engineering curriculum.
  2. Provide leadership in the development and revision of engineering curriculum to meet the needs of both transfer and work-force bound students.
  3. Participate in curriculum evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of/desire to learn the needs of the Engineering workforce in Orange County and develop appropriate industry partnerships for curriculum enhancement.
  5. Serve as a coordinator and mentor for partnerships with local universities, high-schools and industry.
  6. Develop and maintain Engineering laboratory curriculum and equipment to meet current industry standards.
  7. Maintain current knowledge in the subject and related matter areas.
  8. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  9. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
  10. Assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
  11. Lead and/or participate in industry advisory committees.  Use environmental scans, economic, needs assessment, and other objective data analysis methods to improve program and curriculum.
  12. Participate as required to improve programs, course offerings, create a positive learning environment, and achieve college goals and objectives.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications defined by the State Chancellor's Office:

  1. Must meet one of the following qualifications (a) through (c):
    1. Possess a master's degree from an accredited institution in any field of Engineering
    2. Possess a bachelor's degree in Engineering AND a master's in degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, or geology from an accredited institution
    3. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency (downloadable at www.cccd.edu/employment) in addition to all other required materials.
  2. Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 
Desirable Qualifications:  
  • Recent experience teaching engineering, engineering technology, or related interdisciplinary engineering at the post-secondary level.
  • Evidence of, or interest in, developing and delivering hands-on interdisciplinary topics in engineering and engineering related to career preparation.
  • Evidence of or an interest in developing community partnerships including oversight of an advisory board for degree and certificate programs.
  • Industrial experience in civil, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, and/or control systems, or related fields, with additional certifications in engineering and/or technology areas.
  • Interest in, or experience with, coordinating student groups.
  • Desire to develop and implement new programs that encourage a broad spectrum of students to pursue Engineering as a transfer major such as Women and Minorities in Science & Technology and an ability to develop curriculum in emerging areas of engineering.
  • Desire to provide leadership in working with other disciplines and networking with industry.
  • Evidence of commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with engineering instructors, laboratory technicians, and other colleagues
  • Experience with grant writing, development, and implementation of grant-funded or other projects, building engineering labs, or other design-related technology.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently under prepared student population.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
  • Ability to work with computers, and use the internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate); and intrinsic motivation and ability to develop and teach online courses.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

For a full-time, two-semester position, a maximum starting range of $49,354 to $84,144 is offered, based on the 2016-2017 salary schedule of $49,354 to $117,665. In addition, an annual stipend of $2,878 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Academic Senate

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
