The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Learning Communities Counselor, De Anza College.

Under the general direction of the Dean of Equity and Engagement, and in collaboration with the Learning Communities Director, the Learning Communities Counselor supports, with an intersectional understanding, retention and student success by providing academic, career and personal counseling services. The counselor will primarily serve LGBTQ+ students, low-income and disproportionately impacted students (Black, African American, Latinx, Filipinx, Pacific Islanders, and Native American) also known as BIPOC communities, collaborating with instructional divisions, campus support services and programs, and other Learning Communities. This position will both support these student populations and teach for designated Learning Communities related to these populations. The counselor will be expected to maintain flexible student appointment hours and be available some evenings and weekends for Learning Community and/or campus-wide events.

Counseling & Teaching:
  • Provide equity-minded and culturally responsive personal, academic, career and transfer counseling to potential, new and continuing LGBTQ+ and BIPOC, individually and in groups, including in the Ethnic and Pride Inclusion Center (EPIC), which is the campus's multicultural center.
  • Teach counseling, personal development, and career exploration courses for Learning Communities.
  • Establish an effective rapport with students and assist them in clarifying academic goals, selecting a major and educational planning for transfer, associate degree and certificate programs by utilizing educational planning technology.
  • Coordinate, implement, and facilitate equity-minded workshops on counseling related topics.
  • Collaborate with other instructional divisions and programs on campus including equity programs such as Puente, IMPACT AAPI, Umoja, First Year Experience, REACH, and LEAD.
  • Participate in Summer Bridge activities.
  • Identify and sustain retention strategies to ensure student success in coursework and achieve desired grant outcomes.
  • Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services.
  • Develop relationships with 4-year college and university outreach representatives and work collaboratively with the Transfer Center.

Classroom & Student Visits:
  • Conduct visits to our LGBTQ+ & BIPOC focused Learning Communities classes to introduce counseling and college support services.
  • Facilitate workshops for students on educational planning and success for students in Learning Communities as needed.
  • Provide culturally responsive crises intervention for students that may arise in the Learning Communities.

Faculty Training and Support:
  • As needed, assist with faculty teams facing challenging situations in Learning Communities with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students.
  • Attend all campus Counseling and Advising In-services.

  • Assist in recruiting students for Learning Communities as needed.
  • Consult with Learning Communities Director and Pride Center Faculty Coordinator and other Learning Communities cohort counselors to ensure that targeted LGBTQ+ students across programs are being served adequately.
  • Participate in campuswide LGBTQ+ and BIPOC-based events (such as Lavender Graduation, Queer and Now Conference, Learning Community events, Affinity Group programming, EPIC Center programming etc.) as directed by the Dean.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extracurricular activities.

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.

Note: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills in providing academic, personal, and career counseling to LGBTQ+ students (including sexual orientation, gender identities expressions including trans, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary populations) and BIPOC students, specifically first-generation and low-income college students, through an intersectional lens.
  • Experience in providing culturally responsive counseling strategies for personal development, college success and/or career workshops with a specific emphasis in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identified students.
  • Experience in teaching counseling, personal development, and career exploration courses.
  • Experience working with learning communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in working closely and collaboratively with a team.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.
  • Experience working in a student success program serving BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ students.

HIRING RANGE: $66,539.00 - $109,280.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
