Job Description


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Health and Wellness Center supports student success by recognizing that total wellness is essential to academic success. The Center strives to provide optimum physical and mental health services to the college community in a confidential environment with sensitivity to individual needs. Quality clinical services, innovative health, wellness promotion activities, and outside referrals to low-cost providers in the area are provided in a caring, confidential, cost-effective, and convenient manner. Full-time and part-time students currently enrolled in SAC credit classes are eligible for services. Most services are provided at no cost to the student. A nominal fee may be charged for certain laboratory tests, prescriptive medications, and some medical procedures. Nursing duties range from blood draws for titers, TB testing, immunizations, counseling, and first-aid. Please join us in creating a culture of safety as we offer inclusive, trauma informed care.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under direction of the Dean of Student Support Services and Health Services Coordinator, Registered Nurses will assess physical and mental health needs of students. Work collaboratively and assist clerical support staff, physicians and other registered nurses to assess, plan, intervene and evaluate patients, refer students to community health providers as indicated, provide first aid to students and/or staff members, appropriate to a college based Student Health Services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Provide nursing care to students in Student Health Services.
  • Assist college physicians and mental health professionals in provision of health care to the college student population.
  • Evaluate mental and physical health needs of students and make appropriate referrals for disposition.
  • Assist in crisis intervention, health education, and short-term counseling.
  • Assess student's stress levels as it relates to academic, personal commitments to assist in realistic priority determination.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus community resources for socio-economic, legal, and financial needs.
  • Provide follow up on medical and mental health treatment of students.
  • Administer immunizations.
  • Administer emergency first aid to student, college staff, and visitors.
  • Follow protocol for communicable disease control.
  • Orient new RN's and student health staff.
  • Alert area manager of possible areas of concern requiring intervention.
  • Critically assess severity of illnesses, injuries and emergencies and adopt efficient and effective course of action.
  • Document accurate required health information in Electronic Medical Records of students, faculty and staff.
  • Refer patients to appropriate health care providers for management of acute and chronic health complaints beyond the scope of college based Student Health Services.
  • Maintain control in emergency health care situations. Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality in maintaining critical and private health information, records, and reports.
  • Assist health professionals to monitor and maintain appropriate levels of medical supplies and medications.
  • Clarify and understand oral and written directions for ongoing patient services in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Work independently within the scope of Nurse Practice Act and with minimal clinical supervision.
  • Assist in formulation/revision of written, procedures, standing orders and protocol for student health services.
  • Comply with mandatory reporting requirements as defined by licensure, epidemiology, health and safety.
  • Perform additional related health services work as required.



Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Applicants must meet one of the following):

  • Must possess a valid, current California license as a Registered Nurse, BSN & California Public Health Nurse Certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification Card,
  • Ambulatory Care or Hospital Emergency Department experience, College Health Nursing experience is preferred.
