About the Department
The Tacoma Community College (TCC) Mathematics Department offers a variety of college level math courses to support the first two years of study and are designed to meet the full spectrum of pathways needs for its students to include Arts and Communication; Business; People and Communities; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); and Health and Wellness Pathways. The Department also offers developmental math courses from arithmetic through intermediate algebra in both classroom and computer mediated learning formats. The Department is also one of the few community colleges in the state to offer the national renowned Statway© sequence. These developmental course offerings make up half of our math offerings each quarter. Our students use graphing calculators in almost all college level math courses and incorporate various software platforms into the more advanced courses. The Department is committed to presenting mathematics from multiple perspectives and using student projects as an assessment tool.

Position Summary
This is a full-time position which entails preparing and teaching courses in college-level math courses including calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. This position reports to the Dean for Mathematics, Science & Engineering and supports the broader scope of academic pathways at TCC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and teach college-level math courses to include calculus, linear algebra and differential equations
  • Develop, review, and revise curriculum
  • Advise and mentor students, helping them to formulate sound educational and career plans
  • Serve on college committees
  • Participate in department, division, and college governance
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of math, science, and engineering students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Mathematics, Math Education or closely related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic preparation in mathematics for STEM pathways
  • Background in computer science and/or experience teaching computer sciences courses
  • Experience teaching mathematics at the community college level for STEM majors, pre-health students or general education students
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in departmental projects and initiatives
  • Demonstrated cultural self-awareness and cultural competency toward students and colleagues

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check.

  • Ability to respond to the broad-ranging needs of a diverse student population
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Experience in recruiting and retaining underrepresented students into science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • Dedication to remaining current in the discipline
  • Experience in reviewing and developing curriculum
  • Interest in integrating technology into teaching and learning including LMS/CMS software
  • Ability to teach a variety of courses
  • Ability to facilitate learning in a variety of formats such as traditional classroom, online courses and an independent learning/tutorial environment
  • Incorporates contemporary teaching techniques such as collaborative learning and student projects
  • Demonstrated commitment to helping students improve their writing and critical thinking skills and to assessing those skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development

Terms of Employment
This is a full-time tenure track faculty position contracted on an annual basis. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. The salary will be prorated to reflect the actual contract days remaining in the academic year. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the TCC Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee may be available. Evening and off campus assignments may be a part of the instructional load. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department. Degrees must be from accredited colleges or universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by National Student Clearinghouse.
