Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. One of the three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus, minutes away from a world-class zoo and Balboa Park, providing academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. Assignment may include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes. Major Responsibilities The Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy is a member of the Physical Sciences Department and reports to the Dean of the School of Mathematics, Sciences, and Nursing Education (MSNE). The Physical Sciences Department includes the disciplines of Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and Geography. The initial assignment may include teaching courses in introductory astronomy and in both algebra-based and calculus-based physics. Responsibilities will include supervising and instructing students, maintaining office hours for student advisement and counseling, consulting with laboratory technicians in the preparation and delivery of laboratory instruction, participating in periodic meetings of the department and/or School of MSNE, participating in the work of college committees, assisting in the development of curriculum, and serving as a liaison between the physics and astronomy programs and other college and community entities. Qualifications Master's in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR the equivalent.   5. Experience in co-curricular activities designed to support students' academic and professional success, nurture students' passion for science and develop their STEM identity.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, administrators, instructional laboratory technicians and other staff.
  7. Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities;
  8. Experience in making effective classroom presentations that demonstrate subject matter mastery, a working knowledge of learning theory, and a variety of effective and innovative instructional techniques and technologies;
  9. Education and/or experience in curriculum development, including the development, implementation, and assessment of student learning outcomes;
  10. Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, classroom practices to more effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations with a goal of closing equity gaps;
  11. Commitment to teaching at the community college level;
  12. Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and technologies, including our state-of-the-art planetarium, to enhance student learning experiences;
  13. Skill and ability in communicating in a clear and concise manner;
  14. Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and classified professionals;
