Position Information
 
The TRIO Upward Bound Program at the Community College of Philadelphia is in search of an experienced, energetic high school Biology or Chemistry teacher to facilitate a lab science class for rising 10th -12th graders from the Philadelphia School District participating in this extra-curricular college prep program aimed at potential first-generation college students from low-income households.

The class will be held at the main campus of the Community College of Philadelphia Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Monday, June 23, 2025, ending Wednesday, July 23, 2025. There are three sections of the class, each one hour long with approximately 12 students per class. Classes begin at 9:40 a.m. and end at 12:50 p.m. The position is 3 hours per day x 14 teaching days. Course hours may change at the discretion of the course needs, however the hours described above are currently the prescribed hours. All candidates must have child abuse clearances, FBI fingerprinting, PA State Criminal Background Checks and have completed the Child Abuse Recognition and Reporter Training within the past 5 years or renew certifications/course completion prior to start date.

All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and teaching experience, preferably in a high school setting. Interested applicants should submit cover letter, resume and two references by April 4, 2025.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Teach a lab science class (Biology or Chemistry) for rising 10th to 12th graders from the Philadelphia School District, as part of the TRIO Upward Bound college prep program.
  • Teach three sections of the class, each lasting one hour, with approximately 12 students per class.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans and lab activities tailored to high school students in a college prep program, focusing on Biology or Chemistry content.
  • Ensure students engage in hands-on learning experiences that enhance their understanding of scientific concepts.
  • Monitor and support students’ academic progress, providing assistance as needed to ensure their success in the course.
  • Create a dynamic, supportive classroom environment conducive to learning and growth for first-generation, low-income students.
  • Maintain required child abuse clearances, FBI fingerprinting, PA State Criminal Background Checks, and complete the Child Abuse Recognition and Reporter Training (if not already current).
  • Be flexible with course schedule adjustments as needed, based on the requirements of the program.
  • Demonstrate a sense of connection and responsibility for helping the College to achieve success through a commitment to its mission, vision, and values.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of existing technology to further learning for students. Incorporate instructional technology to support the learning process.
  • Communicate effectively, share vision, focus on people, initiate positive change, value differences and foster collaboration. Work with and inspire others to achieve college, department, and individual success. Proactively identify/address problems.
  • Establish an inclusive environment in the classroom. Demonstrate an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of the College’s faculty, staff and students.
  • Manage the learning environment with a student-centered focus. Implement diverse teaching and learning strategies that accommodate the learning styles of students.
  • Strive for excellence in teaching, applying best practices in field of discipline, and modeling behaviors that encourage student success and retention. Recognize the unique needs, culture, and context of students and advocates for their learning and well-being.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biology, Chemistry or related field is required.
  • Teaching experience with high school age students is required.

* Bachelor’s degree in a different field may be considered if the candidate’s teaching experience with high school students is directly related to Biology or Chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience teaching diverse student populations and addressing equity gaps.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching within a community college.
  • Bilingual or other language proficiency.
