Essential Functions:

The ideal candidate will share Clovis Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 10,000 students of which 38% are Latinx, 1% are American Indian/Alaska Native, 8% are Asian, 3% are Black/African American, 42% are White, and 6% are multiracial. CCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at Clovis Community College, the counselor's assignment will include 50% assigned to Career Technical Education (CTE) programs and 50% assigned to dual enrollment. The counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including educational planning, orientation, transfer, veteran services, student recruitment, and personal counseling to a diverse student population. Duties may include extended day, evening and/or Saturday hours and assignments. The counselor will be responsible for:
  • Instructing counseling classes for job preparation, career planning, study skills, transfer preparation, or group dynamics;
  • Multi-media classroom presentations and advising;
  • Large group presentations;
  • Implementing retention strategies;
  • Integrating technology into counseling functions;
  • Participating in the implementation of student success strategies;
  • Implementing student learning outcomes to improve student learning;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Involvement in committee work and strategic planning efforts;
  • Performing other established duties and responsibilities of counselors; and
  • Assuming such other duties as may be assigned by the Dean of Student Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage family and child counseling;


  • A valid California Community College Credential;


  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
(NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with CTE programs and dual enrollment;
  • Experience developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • Experience conducting workshops and teaching courses in career and personal development;
  • Knowledge of California Community College matriculation processes;
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
  • Experience working with high school partners;
  • Experience working with instructional faculty and staff to monitor dual enrollment courses;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:

171-181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $54,029 $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the recommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President, Instruction and Student Services and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
