Current Work of the Department/Discipline
The Dental Hygiene Program, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation since the fall of 2003, prepares students to work in a variety of settings, including private dental offices, public health clinics, and alternative practice sites such as schools and long-term care facilities. The Dental Hygiene Program is one of only two programs at the College that provides clinical teaching on-site with dental hygiene services provided to the public in a fully operational ambulatory care clinic. Faculty dedication to the success of students is evident through the strong student outcomes on both the written Dental Hygiene National Board Exam and clinical Western Regional Examining Board Exam.
Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinator – Responsible for preparation and delivery of coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to success equity, respect for diversity, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
Facilitate, supervise, and evaluate Dental Hygiene students in a variety of clinical settings.
Manage Dental Hygiene adjunct faculty assigned to clinical courses.
Prepare and teach courses in the field of Dental Hygiene to a diverse and multicultural student population based on the department’s approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline, including interactive video technology, distance learning and other technology..
Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.
Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
Serve as a mentor to students in the Dental Hygiene program.
Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
Serve on collegewide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice president, vice president, executive vice president.
Principal Professional Standards
Appropriate use of the college’s learning management system.
Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.

Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.

Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
In accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or higher; and
DDS, Bachelor’s, or Associate degree in Dental Hygiene
Two year Dental Hygiene certificate plus general education courses equates to an Associate degree
Three years of non-teaching, industry-related work experience is required for applicants with an Associate degree or certificate in Dental Hygiene
Must be a graduate of a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)

In accordance with Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, applicants with an Associate degree or certificate in Dental Hygiene must have three years of non-teaching, industry-related work experience.

Current license, in good standing, to practice dental hygiene in Texas by August 1, 2021. Restricted licensure, such as a dental school faculty license will not qualify.
