Instructional Assistant – Chemistry

Under general supervision, to assist the instructor in the preparation of instructional materials and in laboratory demonstration; to operate and demonstrate specialized instruments and equipment; and to perform related work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Assist in laboratory set up, including mixing and dispensing chemicals, preparing specimens, setting up equipment, dispensing equipment, checking in student work, disposing of chemicals and specimens and checking in equipment and materials.
b. Set up specialized instruments, equipment, and demonstrations.
c. Maintain specialized instruments and equipment in good condition.
d. Issue equipment and supplies to students.
e. Assist in the preparation of equipment and supplies budget.
f. Assist in planning and preparation of audio-visual aids.
g. Assist in ordering supplies.
h. Supervise student assistants.
i. Assist in grading, scoring and marking of tests from an answer key.
j. Notify students of test results.
k. Provide information on resources available to students.
l. Keep records and documentation on equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for the lab and determine where to obtain them when needed.
m. Demonstrate and maintain a check on safety procedures in the laboratory.
n. Direct students in emergency procedures and observe/enforce shop, laboratory and student center rules.
o. Demonstrate or describe the proper operation of equipment, instruments and supplies used in lab work.
p. Make minor repairs and adjustments to laboratory related equipment.
q. Perform general clerical duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of a laboratory/tutorial center and classrooms.
r. Operate and instruct others in the use of audio-visual equipment.
s. Consult with vendors regarding supplies, materials and equipment needs.
t. Operate District vehicles.
u. Perform other related work as required.
Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge of:
1. The sciences of botany, zoology, human anatomy, human physiology, ecology and microbiology at the junior college level.
2. Supplies and equipment of a life science learning laboratory.
3. Fundamentals of chemistry as related to life sciences.
4. Intermediate level math.
5. Animal care and nutrition.
6. English usage, spelling grammar and punctuation.
7. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:
8. Properly set up, operate and demonstrate the correct operation/handling of tools, materials and equipment used in the assigned learning lab.
9. Perform basic college level work in the assigned academic field.
10. Perform basic math.
11. Maintain simple records.
12. Supervise the work of student assistants.
13. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices may be required.
14. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
15. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:
1. Equivalent to completion of coursework leading to an Associates degree in biology, or varied technical laboratory experience in life science areas.
2. Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.
