Job Description Summary:
To provide academic advising and related student support services and to facilitate Austin Community College’s (ACC) Guided Pathways model.

Job Description:

Description of Duties and Tasks

1) Maintains continued responsibility for all knowledge, skills, abilities, and duties identified in Area of Study (AoS) advising specialist job description.
2) Responsible for maintaining essential knowledge competencies and acquiring/applying academic coaching skills to enhance student success.
3) Conducts follow-up interviews with students to determine if their needs have been met.
4) Utilizes and expands coaching and advising competencies to support success of students with specialized needs (combat veterans reintegrating into the academic setting, students on the autism spectrum, deaf students, Deferred Action Childhood Arrival (DACA), ESOL/speakers of other languages, international students, students not meeting academic performance criteria, and others as identified by ACC district leadership).
5) Evaluates students’ abilities, interests, and personality characteristics using various tools and technologies, records, interviews, and other resources.
6) Instructs students in career development techniques, such as job searches, application strategies, resume writing, and interview skills. Guides individuals in advanced transfer preparation such as essay preparation.
7) Plans and facilitates programing and workshops that promote positive adjustment of individuals to new life experiences such as transitioning to college, establishing healthy personal/professional relationships, acquiring personal effectiveness competencies (soft skills), entering the workforce, working with diverse populations, etc.
8) Promotes activities that support federal compliance with alcohol and drug prevention programs, Title IX, Clery, and Violence Against Women Acts and classes that teach students to handle conflicts without resorting to violence.
9) Identifies cases of suspected domestic abuse, self harm/harm to others or family-related problems and encourage or directly refer students to campus-based mental health professionals and services.
10) Addresses and informs community groups, faculty, and staff members of available services for students.
11) Guides students during advising sessions regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, Texas Success Initiative (TSI) compliance, Academic Standard Progress, adjustment to college life, study habits, career planning, and financial wellness.
12) Supports students during advising sessions with the application, award, and administration of financial aid to ensure eligible students have access to and leverage federal and state aid for the completion of academic awards.
13) May mentor and/or train AoS advising specialists as assigned by supervisor, dean, or designee.

Knowledge

  • Current advising theory, trends and best practices.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles and best practices associated with Student Success specifically, effective educational plan development, timely and effective academic coaching strategies, graduation and transfer processes, short-term services and activities that support program persistence and completion.
  • Student databases, information management systems, caseload management, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and general administrative.
  • Multicultural education programs and systems and the importance of cultural competence in promoting student success.
  • College admissions and onboarding processes, program offerings and educational pathways, and managing the transition to college.

Skills

  • Maintain an established work schedule including weekend and evening hours.
  • Mastery of basic student coaching competencies.
  • Effective interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Effective organizational and planning skills.
  • Disseminate complex information effectively to the intended recipient.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships that foster continued student success.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, student services and academic departments that foster continued student success.
  • Exhibit cultural competence when working with all students and other members of the college community.

Technology Skills

  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
  • Mastery of college technologies associated with student success and support.

Required Work Experience

  • AoS advising specialists meeting the following requirements will be evaluated for reclassification to an AoS senior advising specialist:
    1)18 months employment as an AoS advising specialist at ACC.
    2) Proficiency in all areas of the AoS advising specialist job description as demonstrated by satisfactory or above ratings in all areas of most recent performance evaluation.
    3) ACC Foundational Advising Competency certification.
    4) ACC Advising Coach Skills certification.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Special Requirements

  • ACC Foundational Advising Competency certification.
  • ACC Advising Coach Skills certification.

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual: English – Spanish

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a standard office or similar environment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

Salary Range
$37,465 – $53,521

Full-time faculty and staffing table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the college are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.
 

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty and Administrators Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by federal law.
