Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Teacher Education at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Spring 2023. Assignments may include some combination of day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes.

While the current vacancy is at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Duties will also include, leading the Teacher Education Department and participating actively in the work of the Learning Resources and Academic Support Leadership Team, the college, and District.The college encourages and supports professional growth, expecting the successful candidate to demonstrate career objectives consistent with the mission of the college.

Major Responsibilities:
This position reports to the Dean of Learning Resources and Academic Support (LRAS) and is a member of the LRAS Department. The Teacher Education faculty will assist in the planning, organization, management, and implementation of the Teacher Education Program. This is a 10-month position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will have primary responsibilities for teaching Education classes and coordinating the Teacher Education Program.
Primary Responsibilities will include but will not be limited to: coordinating the Teacher Education instruction program, engaging in and delivering professional development in the latest pedagogical and andragogical teaching theories and practices, data collection, analysis, and reporting on Teacher Education programs and activities. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach a range of courses within the Education discipline, promoting engaging and inclusive educational environments that support student learning. They will be culturally responsive in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members who span a diverse range of languages, nationalities and ethnicities, socio-economic levels, ages, identities, abilities, and educational experiences and have the ability to communicate, consult, and collaborate with stakeholders across campus, external educational and community partners, and the district, with self-initiative and creativity.

Masters in education OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
A minimum of 2 years experience teaching in the public TK-12 system and/orA minimum of 2 years experience teaching in higher education
Preference will be given to team-oriented, equity-minded individuals with the knowledge, ability, and/or skills to:

  • Teach a variety of Teacher Ed and other Education classes.
  • Work with cross-curriculum teacher-ed courses, instructors, and students in order to develop partnerships across a large institution.
  • Develop and update the Teacher Education program curriculum.
  • Work with cross-curriculum teacher-ed courses, instructors, and students.
  • Communicate effectively, including excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written skills.
  • Demonstrate their understanding or/and experience with current and emerging educational pedagogy/andragogy.
  • Evaluate and apply knowledge to the design and delivery of instruction.
  • Develop partnerships internally and externally with community, TK-12, 4-year, for-profit, and nonprofit institutions.
  • Investigate, develop, draft, and manage various state and federal teacher education grants and budgets.
  • Participate in regional and statewide teacher training efforts and organizations.
  • Keep abreast of teacher education legislation and lead the implementation of changes across the program.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with the Child Development program.
  • Recruit diverse students into the teacher education program pathways.
  • Work with Institutional Effectiveness to maintain records to track student progress before, during, and after the program and lead Program Review efforts and programmatic analysis of utilization data.
  • Recruit and provide direction to potential adjunct Teacher Education faculty.
  • Coordinate the promotion, marketing, and develop an online presence for the Teacher Ed program.
  • Provide direction to a team of classified professional colleagues.
  • Create partnerships with counseling to clarify Teacher Education pathways and transfer/credentialing requirements for students and other faculty.
  • Work independently with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and proactive initiative with new and developing programs.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 - $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
