Class 1, Step C - Class 6, Step C ($6,933.44- $8,849.03) per month based on the 2024 AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Faculty Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable.
The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor. Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Spanish (Spanish for Spanish Speakers), at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Spring 2025. Assignments may include some combination of day, evening, and/or online classes.

Major Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor of Spanish is in the Department of Languages and reports to the Dean of Arts and Languages. The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching Spanish for Spanish Speakers courses for the Spanish Speaker program, and serving as Program Director/Coordinator for the program, contributing to conditions for students to succeed both in the classroom and throughout the campus, and serving on and/or chairing department and campus committees. As needed, the instructor may be required to teach beginning and/or intermediate level Spanish courses. Classes may be taught on-campus, in a hybrid format, or remotely over Zoom. The instructor must fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the San Diego Community College job description. A typical weekly teaching load consists of 15 hours of lecture courses.
Qualifications
Master's in the language being taught OR
Bachelor's in the language being taught AND Master's in another language or linguistics OR
The equivalent.

- Evidence of recent and successful experience teaching Spanish for Spanish Speakers and a commitment to lower division language teaching with a focus on Language, Literature, and Culture to Heritage Speakers of Spanish.
- An understanding of the community college environment and mission, and its impact on the future success of Heritage Speakers of Spanish.
- Knowledge of and ability to implement contemporary philosophies and methods of instruction and assessment in the teaching of Spanish and Spanish for Spanish Speakers, including the integration of communicative learning activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to appropriate academic standards, especially the National Standards for Foreign Language Teaching and student learning outcomes for lower division language courses.
- Demonstrated awareness of and ability to successfully use technology to support language learning/acquisition and student success.
