Cabrillo College is accepting applications in order to fill a temporary, part-time, non-teaching faculty assignment that will become available in late 2022:

  Cabrillo Stage Artistic Director (Non-Credit) - Associate

 

The Cabrillo Stage Artistic Director assignment is in the Music and/or Theatre Arts Department at Cabrillo College and reports to the Dean of the Visual, Applied, and Performing Arts (VAPA) Division.

This position is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing all aspects of the artistic vision and focus of each Cabrillo Stage season and each production produced by the company during the season. The Artistic Director makes all major decisions and has final authority about the ongoing development of the aesthetic values and activities for each production and the season after extensive consultation with the VAPA Dean and the Managing Director/Consultant.

About the College: Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby agricultural and farming industries as well as the Silicon Valley business environment.

Examples of Duties

DEPARTMENTAL:

  Coordination of long-range and annual planning in collaboration with the Managing Director/Consultant and the Dean

  Chooses each piece to be produced; creates and develops a vision of the entire season

  Develops annual program budget in collaboration with the Managing Director/ Consultant and the Dean of the Visual, Applied, and Performing Arts (VAPA) Division

  Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates artistic personnel including independently contracted directors, performers, designers, stage managers, and student positions

  Works with the directors of each show to recruit actors and musicians throughout the season and at advertised auditions

  Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates key technical personnel, including Production Manager and Technical Director in collaboration with the Managing Director/Consultant

  Meets and collaborates with each production’s Director to make sure that the artistic vision is met within the allocated budget

  Attends all production meetings to support and evaluate ongoing production needs and artistic goals as they evolve

  Acts as a spokesperson and advocate for the organization's artistic purpose via press interviews, speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and at fundraising events and solicitations

  Directly creates and drafts press releases, promotional verbiage, and Artistic Director notes in coordination with Public Relations, Social Media coordinator, and Managing Director/Consultant

  Develops artistic fundraising receptions, dinners, and productions to supplement fundraising

  Initiates the development of good relations with local and Bay Area theater companies and other cultural organizations by attending productions and participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate

  Is responsible for all aspects of the educational component including, but not limited to: enrollment of company members and interns, assigning extra class units to Cabrillo faculty in the company, and all record keeping in line with Cabrillo College procedures

  Fosters educational programs in, or in conjunction with, Cabrillo Stage in order to fulfill the educational part of the company’s mission

  Coordinates and communicates directly with all relevant College departments for all onsite related activities including, but not limited to, facility and room reservations, equipment requests, and all faculty-required requests

  Requests perusal scripts, show contract requests, and script acquisition from appropriate royalty houses and ensures production teams, musicians, and cast members have required materials

 

Other Duties:

  Available to complete assignment during evening or off-campus 

  Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways

  Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress

  Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours

  Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation

  Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

  Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications in one of the two disciplines as listed below: 

 

MUSIC:

  Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff, AND

  Master's in Music OR

  Bachelor's in Music AND a Master's in Humanities OR

  *Equivalent OR

  Possess a lifetime California Community College Instructor credential in Music

 

DRAMA/THEATER ARTS:

  Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff, AND

  Master’s or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/ performance OR

  Bachelor’s or Bachelor's of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/ performance AND Master’s in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR

  *Equivalent OR

  Possess a lifetime California Community College Instructor credential in Drama/Theater Arts

 

Required Professional Expertise:

  Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field

  Knowledge of and commitment to strategies and practices that enhance student success at community colleges, including effective use of technology

  Effective oral and written communication skills.

  Demonstrated ability to perform the duties effectively as described above

  Demonstrated ability to communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; gender identities, sexual orientations; and students with disabilities

  Evidence of professional activities and service beyond the primary teaching assignment

  Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others

  Demonstrated responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices in the classroom

  Demonstrated ability to reflect critically on institutional and teaching practices that aim to increase cultural responsiveness

  Knowledge and understanding of the accountability and critical dimensions of equity

  Demonstrated ability addressing issues of equity in the classroom

 

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

  Successful work experience at the community college level

  Experience working with diverse student populations

  Knowledge of culturally-responsive pedagogical teaching techniques and effective ways for engaging students who are historically under-represented and under-served.

Additional Information

Starting Salary: $1,454 - $2,232 per teaching unit, per semester.  This position includes three (3) teaching units in the Fall Semester, three (3) teaching units in the Spring Semester, and six (6) teaching units in the Summer during the Cabrillo Stage summer season.  Salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the Associate faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $97 per unit is granted to eligible associate faculty. Assignments may be at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends; hours to be arranged.
