The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of Fall 2018, we currently enroll over 25,000 students in which 57% identify as Latinx, 7% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 21% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 8% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Providing instruction for the Police Academy on the Fresno City College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:
  • Teaching a full range of police academy courses;
  • Ensuring the security of all phases of testing academy students, including written examinations, and practical exercises and scenarios;
  • Participating in the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), attending regular POST Consortium's, workshops and seminars;
  • Collaborating with faculty to stay informed of changes in curriculum, learning objectives, training and updates;
  • Meeting with and advising agency representatives on the progress of affiliated students;
  • Overseeing and evaluating instructional, technological, testing, and remedial training;
  • Developing sequenced instructional schedules;
  • Participating in the hiring process of the instructor(s), training officer(s) and staff, and making recommendations for their selection and assignment; and evaluating instructor's and training officer's performance;
  • Delivering course curriculum in accordance with the Training and Testing Specifications;
  • Supervising academy operations for certification compliance when instruction is being conducted in the absence of the director or when designated;
  • Facilitating recruitment of students by scheduling interviews with agencies;
  • Supervising, counseling and interacting with academy students;
  • Monitoring inventory and conditions of facilities and equipment;
  • Monitoring safety guidelines for POST and College compliance;
  • Substituting for recruit training officer and certificated staff as necessary;
  • Operating a computer and other equipment;
  • Scheduling and coordinating schedules for all basic academies, modules one academy and re-qualification course;
  • Providing oral and written reports;
  • Assisting in marketing and promotion of the program;
  • Attending meetings as assigned by academy director;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND
  • Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience; OR any associate degree and six years of professional experience;OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential;


  • Experience as a sworn full-time first-level supervisor;


  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate the instruction and management of the Regular Basic Course instructional system;
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience working with a diverse student population;
  • A genuine interest in the broad range of issues facing law enforcement, with a passion to drive the profession toward positive change through training and standards;
  • A strong understanding of the administration of law enforcement training programs, including an understanding of how technology can aid their delivery;
  • Five years of experience in a law enforcement agency, with at least two years of public safety supervisory level experience;
  • Experience teaching police academy courses;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • An earned Masters in Criminology, Police Science, Public Safety, Public Administration, or other Law Enforcement related field from an accredited college or university or an earned doctorate from an accredited college or university in any discipline or related area taught in the division;
  • Evidence of effective planning in the management, supervision, and evaluation of the work of others;
  • Attended the POST Academy Instructor Certification Course or willingness to successfully complete the course within one year of employment;
  • Experience as a community college instructor in one or more law enforcement related disciplines;
  • Knowledge of POST regulatory requirements;
  • Technologically competent to understand and use contemporary software such as MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook;
  • Experience teaching, coordinating, supporting, scheduling, and staffing both lecture and laboratory classes;
  • Demonstrated effective communication both oral and written, collaboration and delegating skills;
  • Ability to use software tools to generate and analyze data to assist in the decision making process;
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire and administer external funding for support of programs in the department;
  • Ability to use organizational skills that enable the performance of duties in a timely fashion with attention to detail;
  • Experience in curriculum development with POST or college level;
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:

224 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is $72,541 $109, 209 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,082 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 2nd.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the recommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews which are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 16th.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
