Job Description Summary:

To support the Austin Community College (ACC) District's advancement of sustainability strategies and goals working with various stakeholders across the district; responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, and tracking programs and performance metrics for the college's initiatives related to ACC's Climate Action Plan.


Job Description:

Description of Duties and Tasks

  • Under the direction of the director, develops long-range plans, implements, and maintains the college's sustainability initiatives related to ACC's Climate Action Plan including, but not limited to, Transportation Demand Management, Education and Outreach, Food Services, Recycling & Waste Management, Water & Energy Conservation, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Construction and Renovation, Sustainable Facility Operations, Greening the Workplace, and related programs.
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the sustainability programs throughout the district.
  • Develops and maintains program tracking databases, analyzes data, and communicates progress and results to stakeholders; tracks and reports the progress of the college's carbon reduction goals; monitors and analyzes program effectiveness and makes suggestions for improvement.
  • Promotes the college's sustainability programs to both internal and external constituencies including students and employees; serves as a guest speaker such as in weekly employee orientation programs or external conferences; represents the college in multi-agency committees and task forces as assigned; participates in the shared governance process as a sustainability liaison providing technical knowledge; participates in vendor and construction contractor selection committees as requested; leads and manages campus behavior change programs designed to engage the ACC community in sustainability initiatives.
  • Coordinates the communication of the college's sustainability programs including website and social media updates and e-Newsletter; coordinates information on initiatives with various ACC departments including ACC Public Information and College Marketing; coordinates and manages sustainability-related events throughout the district including, but not limited to, Earth Week, Mobility Week, and Green Team activities; provides sustainability guidelines information for vendors, committees, and other stakeholders.  
  • Coordinates volunteers and participates in ACC Zero Waste events.
  • Researches sustainability "best practices" at peer and other institutions.
  • Pursues other funding sources such as government grants when available including writing grant proposals, managing grant program implementation, tracking performance, submitting grant reports, and hosting representatives during funder site visits.
  • Research, develop, and implements Sustainable Development Goals with ACC’s operational practices and academic offerings.
  • Oversees the sustainable transportation initiatives, including Green Pass program and Sustainable Parking initiatives utilizing online applications and web portals.
  • Liaises with Procure to Pay to provide sustainability inputs on future ACC contracts and purchases.



  • Principles and concepts of sustainability.
  • Project planning and management principles, including behavior change models and strategies.
  • Green Building Principles.
  • Federal, state, and local regulations and national standards relating to applicable areas of sustainability, but not limited to waste management, energy, water, and emissions.
  • Coordination of programs, goals, and policies.
  • Reading blueprints.


  • Maintaining an established work schedule.
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including public speaking and technical writing, with tact and diplomacy.
  • Effectively using organizational skills, with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Effectively using analytical skills.
  • Effectively working independently and as a team so that multiple projects are prioritized and effectively managed.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Technology Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point, as well as web development and maintenance software.
  • Ability to maintain and update website.
  • Ability to use social media and work with desktop publishing.
  • Use of specialty computer graphics software application packages.


Required Work Experience

  • Three years related work experience.


Preferred Work Experience

  • Experience working in a higher education setting with diverse constituencies.
  • Eight years of experience in program management and implementation of sustainable practices.
  • Experience in implementing behavioral change initiatives.


Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree.


Preferred Education

  • Master's degree in architecture, engineering, environmental science, behavioral science, or sustainability-related degree.


Special Requirements

  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for local Austin area travel.


Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Grant writing and grant administration experience.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.
  • Experience with volunteer coordination.
  • Graphic design knowledge or experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Dreamweaver, and/or Autodesk AutoCAD.


Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in both an internal and external environment with occasional exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures.
  • Subject to standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and manual dexterity.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.



  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

ACC Benefits Overview

Full-time faculty and staffing table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the college are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty and Administrators Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by federal law.
