Barbering Instructor (Full-time tenure track to begin instruction Fall 2026)
Position Description
This 10-month (175 days), full-time tenure track assignment may include instruction in a variety of Barbering courses. The assignment and schedule, as determined by the District, may consist of day and/or evening classes.
Classes are offered on a 16-week calendar (fall and spring semesters), as well as in a variety of non-traditional scheduling options: winter intersession, evenings, summer sessions, and optional class formats, such as online education courses.
This position is contingent upon funding and final Board approval.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, cultural background, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff; AND - Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience directly related to this position OR - Associate's degree and six years of experience directly related to this position OR - EQUIVALENCY: It is the candidate's responsibility to provide conclusive evidence and justification for equivalency. Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Cosmetology/Barbering Teacher Training Course. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills. - Recent experience in a barber shop as a hands-on barber. - Experience teaching college-level barbering studies courses. - Knowledge of California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology regulations and exam requirements - Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion of principles and practices into instruction. - Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including students with disabilities. - Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching pedagogies that support retention and successful course completion. - Demonstrated ability to actively participate in department, division, and college committees and shared governance. - Interest in and/or experience with curriculum development, including courses and/or degrees. - Interest in and/or experience with program review and assessing Department resource needs. Licenses and Certificates

Maximum placement for newly hired instructor is Step 7. Pay Rate $78,850 - $108,481 annually
ABOUT OUR COSMETOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The cosmetology program is regulated by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Our program has been in existence since 1964. We are proud of our stellar reputation in the community that we serve and beyond. It is our goal to prepare students for licensure and entry level positions in salons. Our program complies with the state regulations that require no less than 1000 hours of theoretical and practical training.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive.
- Teach a variety of barbering courses. - Maintain professional and ethical academic standards. - Provide class instruction in accordance with established course outlines. - Provide class instruction for some day, evening and/or weekend courses. - Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, class/program standards and attendance requirements. - Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with published deadlines. - Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations. - Involve technology in the learning process when appropriate. - Teach students with diverse backgrounds. - Participate actively in staff development and professional growth programs. - Participate in recruitment activities. - Participate in update training to maintain level and currency of knowledge. - Participate in cosmetology/barbering training and/or other training as necessary to achieve and maintain instructor and program certification. - Work with and maintain effective relations with advisory committees and employers. - Meet obligation with regard to grade reporting, meeting scheduled classes, meeting required office hours, and other directions provided by supervisor. - Carry a fair share of other duties (department and committee work, curriculum development, community outreach, etc.) necessary for the smooth functioning of the college, department and discipline. - Work cooperatively with faculty, staff and students. - Maintain formal office hours; participate in department and division meetings. - Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner. - Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with a diverse population both orally and in writing. - Ability to work effectively as a member of the instructional team. -Willingness to participate in the distance education program. - Willingness to develop and assess student learning outcomes. - Evidence of computer literacy and experience with standard computer software on Microsoft Windows platform (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canvas or similar). - Willingness to use and promote technology-mediated instructional techniques. - Possess excellent organization skills.

Selection Process
- A selection committee will review application packages of those candidates who have met the minimum qualifications for this position and will select a limited number of qualified candidates for an interview. - Each candidate may be asked to deliver a presentation on a topic of the selection committee's choice. The candidate will be informed of the topic when an interview appointment is scheduled. - Each candidate may be asked to complete a writing prompt just prior to the interview. - Travel costs must be borne by the applicant. - Final candidates for faculty, management, and supervisor/confidential positions may be interviewed by the Superintendent/President. - If selected as a finalist, the candidate permits the District to contact current and former employer(s) to investigate employment history.
