Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Physics/Astronomy at San Diego Miramar College beginning Fall 2019. One of three colleges within the San Diego Community College District, San Diego Miramar College offers associate degrees, certificates of completion, and the first two years of a bachelor's degree. Founded in 1969, and located in Mira Mesa, our college serves over 10,000 full-time equivalent students (FTES) annually with 72 associate degrees and 94 career technical education certificates. The assignments may also include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus responsibilities.

Major Responsibilities:

The Assistant Professor of Physics/Astronomy reports to the Miramar College Dean of the School of Mathematics, Biological, Exercise, and Physical Sciences.

The Assistant Professor is expected to perform the following duties:
Teach introductory, non-major, and major, lecture and lab courses in Physics, Physical Sciences and/or Astronomy.
Participate in Physical Science department meetings and committees.
Assist with curriculum revision and course/program assessments.
Maintain office hours for student advisement.
Participate in various college and/or district committees which promote participatory governance.
Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with district guidelines.

Qualifications:

Masters in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics
OR
Bachelors in physics or astronomy AND Masters in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

Recent experience in and/or knowledge of teaching lower-division college-level physics lecture and laboratory courses.
Experience and/or knowledge of improving physics education by using active learning strategies in both the physics classroom and the laboratory.
Experience and/or interest in incorporating relevant topics (e.g. alternative energy, solid state components) in the physics classroom and laboratory curriculum.
Experience in and/or interest in engaging in STEM outreach and mentoring activities outside of the classroom.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, administrators, instructional laboratory technicians and other staff.
Ongoing participation in professional development activities in physical sciences.
Upper division or graduate coursework in an engineering discipline.

Licenses:

Pay Information:

Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,783.69 $7,793.19) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
