Under the direction and supervision of the Vice President of Student Services or an assigned manager provide a wide range of outreach, counseling and retention services to a diverse student population. Work directly with students participating in the Men of Color program to provide holistic wrap-around services to support student equity and student success. Serve students in the Men of Color program, and in collaboration with the department, develop a process that recruits and retains students from underrepresented and underserved populations. Assist students from early outreach to college transition and transfer to a four-year institution; this includes high school outreach and recruitment, community outreach, orientation, educational planning, summer enrichment programs, academic coaching, follow up, and transfer planning. Perform core counseling functions including academic, career, and personal counseling and other duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In accordance with the Student Equity and Achievement (SEA) Program, the counselor will deliver a wide range of services that support student equity and success, including but not limited to, outreach and recruitment, counseling and advising, educational planning, and follow-up. Assist Men of Color eligible students in determining and achieving academic, vocational, and personal objectives.
Assist Men of Color program students in clarifying academic goals, selecting a major and educational planning for transfer, associate degree and certificate programs. Develop and implement intake and follow-up procedures for students for the program. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities. Develop intervention and retention strategies to ensure student success. Establish an effective rapport with students. Serve as liaison with other student services and instructional divisions and programs on campus. Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services. Conduct program orientation and coordinate summer transition program. Maintain assigned caseload of students. Collect retention, priority registration activities, course completion, and/or transfer data to report to campus administrators and the District.
The delivery of services would occur both on- and off-campus in multiple ways: in-person, on-line, individual and group meetings, workshops and other innovative ways.
Assist students in clarifying academic goals and selecting a major and establishing/maintaining enrollment priority. Establish a rapport with students; monitor and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal; maintain contact with students throughout their enrollment; and use an early alert system to ensure student persistence and success. Take students to field trips, career, leadership and enrichment events and conferences. Establish and maintain contact with high schools and university partners. Develop other relevant liaisons and networks with on- and off-campus programs and agencies.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attendance at department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of a Counselor. Counselors also have the opportunity to serve on District and college committees and shared governance groups.
- Ability to serve as a liaison and network with on and off campus programs and agencies.
- Ability to develop and provide trainings for faculty and staff.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitation skills both in-person and on-line.
- Knowledge of and the skills to provide services to multiethnic, international and underrepresented students.
- Knowledge of and experience with computers, software, and technology related to counseling.
- Knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining linkages with instructional divisions and special programs.
- Knowledge of and experience in consensus building within a diverse educational environment.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.
- Ability and willingness to work with underrepresented student groups and prospective students in high schools.
- Coursework or training related to cross-cultural perspectives.
- Indoor, office environment.

HIRING RANGE: $73,799.00 - $121,204.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure Track, Grant Funded*, 11-months per year
*Position is dependent upon AB19 and SEAP funding
