Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, School of Health Sciences and Public Service, beginning August 7, 2023, at San Diego Mesa College.
The Dean for the School of Health Sciences and Public Service reports to the Vice President of Instruction and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating instructional programs in close cooperation with Department Chairs. This includes coordinating and supervising class schedules, faculty teaching assignments, curriculum development, staff development, and budget planning. The Dean is involved in hiring and evaluating academic and classified staff. The Dean establishes and maintains connections with relevant community and professional organizations and participates in college governance and decision-making. Currently, the School of Health Sciences and Public Service includes the departments of Allied Health (Dental Assisting, Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting, Neurodiagnostic Technology, Phlebotomy, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Veterinary Technician), Consumer/Nutrition Studies (Child Development, Child Development Center, and Nutrition), American Sign Language-English Interpretation (ASL-English Interpretation), and Work Experience. This position additionally oversees the Baccalaureate degree program, the Allied Health Pro Bono Clinic, and administers the Perkins V funding. They actively participate in Campus, District, Regional, and State CTE planning and initiatives. The College is seeking an applicant who is a positive, collaborative, innovative, and energetic leader.

- Provide effective leadership for the School of Health Sciences and Public Services.
- Work collaboratively with the Schools faculty and classified professionals to develop and implement long- and short-range goals, including alignment with the Colleges master plan and other campuses, District, and Regional planning documents and processes.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and administrators in aspects of school management, including budgeting, enrollment management, and schedule development.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, and academic leaders to support curriculum development and review at both the course and program levels within the College and Region and in alignment with accreditation and licensing requirements.
- Work collaboratively with department chairs to hire, supervise, evaluate, support, and mentor all faculty and classified professionals.
- Apply local, state, and federal regulations to the Colleges and Schools instructional programs, courses, laboratory safety, and activities.
- Advocate for, coordinate, manage, and evaluate transfer and CTE programs, departments, disciplines, and grants at the College, district, community, and regional levels.
- Provide direct support to students as needed to resolve student concerns and make referrals as appropriate to college resources.
- Provide leadership with State initiatives and legislative mandates related to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and associated funding sources such as Strong Workforce, Perkins, etc.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with departments and schools across the campus, community, region, industry, and professional organizations.
- Understand and contribute to a college participatory governance structure and collective bargaining environment.
- Work collaboratively and transparently with the VPI and other administrative leaders.
- Promote and support policies, actions, and activities that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for
this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Possession of a Masters degree from a regionally accredited
2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience
reasonably related to the administrators assignment.
- Demonstrated effective educational leadership in planning and administering programs related to the disciplines within the School of Health Sciences and Public Service.
- Experience with planning, organizing, coordinating, budgeting, promoting, supervising and evaluating academic programs, and advocating for future resource needs, including laboratory equipment, technology, and maintenance.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Career Education requirements, initiatives, and funding, including Perkins and Strong Workforce and the vital and valuable role of CTE programs in preparing students for the workforce.
- Knowledge of effective classroom instruction that provides diverse and effective learning theories to foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism leading to student success.
- Knowledge of and experience with the curriculum development process at the community college, regional, and state levels.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in enrollment management, including schedule development.
- Experience establishing and maintaining partnerships with relevant community and professional organizations, including program advisory committees, private industry, and public agencies, including healthcare-related ones.
- Demonstrated experience in applying local, state, and federal regulations and specialized healthcare-related accreditation requirements to the Colleges instructional programs and courses.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Community College Baccalaureate Degree Program and requirements.
- Experience in developing relationships with high schools, transfer institutions, and industry partners to promote seamless pathways for students.
- Demonstrated effective administrative experience, hiring, evaluating, and working collaboratively with faculty and classified professionals to establish and carry out the Schools planning goals.
- Experience working in a college participatory governance and collective bargaining environment.
- Demonstrated effective conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including both oral and written communication.
- Demonstrated commitment to the missions and values of the California Community College System, the San Diego Community College System, and San Diego Mesa College.
Training and Experience:Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: qualification for a California Community College Supervisor Credential and three years of increasingly responsible and directly related management or supervisory experience in an institution of higher education.
Both of the following: (a) Masters degree; AND (b) One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators administrative assignment.

Range 18 ($9,263.00- $14,852.57) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook.
