Applications are now being accepted for position of Assistant Professor, English, at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Spring 2024. Assignments may include some combination of day, evening, Saturday, remote/hybrid and/or off campus classes.

While the current vacancies exist at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any district facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Dean of Humanities, the incumbent would be a member of the English department teaching primarily English composition courses with opportunities to join departmental rotations for literature and creative writing courses, serving on and/or chairing department and campus committees, maintaining appropriate records and reports, and participating actively in the work of the department, college, and district. The college encourages and supports professional growth, with an emphasis on equity-minded and student-centered practices, consistent with the mission of the college.

Qualifications:
Masters in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR the equivalent.

  • Experience teaching and evaluating students in multiple levels of composition courses.
  • Training and currency in composition theory and pedagogical approaches.
  • Ability and willingness to use research for innovation in the classroom.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Dynamic and student-centered presentation and facilitation skills in multiple classroom modalities.
  • Ability to effectively integrate current technology in teaching multiple classroom modalities.
  • Organization and leadership skills, and an ability to work with a diverse faculty and staff, both within the department and college-wide.
  • A commitment to actively participating in the work of the department and college outside of the classroom through committees, work groups, and other department, college, and district-wide opportunities.
  • Commitment to continued professional learning and growth.
  • Commitment to creating equitable learning opportunities for students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural or ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities, as well as foster youth, returning students, veterans, and other underrepresented populations.



Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step C - Class 6, Step C ($6,652.70- $8,490.72) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Step C is the maximum step placement for a new hire, and this is non-negotiable at this time.

The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
