    This Nursing Simulation Technician position is a categorically funded, part-time assignment: 80%, 32 hours/week, 4 days/week, 10 months per year, Tuesday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with evenings and weekends as required.

    Under general supervision, the Nursing Simulation Technician sets up, operates, troubleshoots and maintains scenario-based nursing skills education equipment (including complex equipment such as mannequins) used to create a realistic learning environment for nursing students in skills and simulation laboratories; and performs related duties as assigned.

    Starting Salary Range: $4,135 to $4,487 per month; plus 5% annual increases up to step 7, maximum initial salary step placement on the classified salary schedule or confidential salary schedule is step 4.

    It is scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending continued categorical funding and Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on the beginning date of assignment. Cabrillo is unable to sponsor work visas.

    Classified employees are required to join the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and as such contribute 8% of their monthly salary to CalPERS on a pre-tax basis.

    Examples of Duties

    The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.



    • Sets up for skills lab and simulation sessions including computer hardware, software and network connectivity; programs nursing mannequins for specific nursing scenario simulations; provides associated instruments, drugs, solutions and supplies that simulate a hospital room layout; matches instructor requests for mannequins and skills scenarios with available equipment; operates simulation console and software and modifies scenarios during live simulations as needed; provides theatrical support for simulations; records simulation activities in approved formats; troubleshoots equipment problems.

    • Provides orientation and advice to students and faculty on the use of medical equipment in the simulation lab environment including high- and low-fidelity mannequins, electronic medical recordings, electronic medical administration devices and required supplies.

    • Participates in faculty development activities for simulation and skills-based learning; participates in formulating new simulation exercises based on nursing curriculum and student or faculty identified needs and current clinical practice issues; participates in preparing scripts for characters and simulation paths; evaluates and recommends changes to simulation scenarios and procedures; programs new scenarios or revisions to simulation scenarios.

    • Performs preventative maintenance and repair of simulation, media and computer equipment in the labs; diagnoses serious equipment malfunctions and works with vendors to make repairs; arranges for contracted general maintenance of equipment and replacement of equipment if required; maintains appropriate records.

    • Coordinates materials, equipment, facilities and supplies for the Nursing Skills Lab and related classes; schedules student appointments, tests, meetings and facilities; sets up, installs, maintains and services equipment, materials and supplies; ensures a clean and safe environment and inspects areas for hazardous materials and spills

    • Conducts N95 Mask Fit tests; schedules test times with students, trains students on the proper fit of a respirator and conducts user seal checks; prepares test solutions, calibrates equipment and performs tests; documents test results.

    • Researches equipment and supply options for simulation and skills labs; obtains appropriate approvals for purchases and creates purchase orders; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; maintains appropriate secured areas for special, technical or hazardous supplies and equipment.

    • Works with outside vendors to troubleshoot equipment, obtain product details, pricing and arrangements for delivery.



    OTHER DUTIES



    • Participates in the onboarding of new nursing staff and trains student volunteers.

    • Works with other Allied Health departments on joint projects to address student needs.

    • Discusses student performance issues with faculty where appropriate.

    • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.

    • Performs related duties as assigned.



    Minimum Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:



    • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff, AND

    • An associate degree in health education, health science, computer science or education, AND

    • Two years of experience in a clinical, laboratory, healthcare or teaching environment, AND/OR

    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.



    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:



    • General principles and practices of nursing and the treatment and care of medical patients.

    • Principles, theories, practices, methods and equipment of a nursing skills laboratory.

    • Current and emerging simulation instructional technologies and associated equipment, tools and products.

    • High- and low-fidelity mannequins and associated simulation and computer equipment.

    • Audio-video equipment and software for recording, duplicating, mixing and editing.

    • Health and safety practices related to a nursing skills lab and simulation program.

    • General principles and concepts of PC and MAC applications and operating systems.

    • Methods and techniques in troubleshooting and resolving problems in simulation equipment, software and tools.

    • General methods and practices of student instruction applicable to a nursing skills laboratory environment.

    • OSHA procedures for compliant N95 Mask Fit tests.

    • General health care terminology.



    Skills and Abilities to:



    • Set up, maintain and resolve problems with simulation mannequins, equipment tools and computers.

    • Apply sound learning theory and knowledge of real-life clinical health care situations to the development and modification of effective scenario-based exercise for nursing students.

    • Give clear, concise explanations of complex nursing concepts, practices and procedures to students.

    • Perform medical mathematics sufficiently and accurately to determine pharmacological and drug dosage calculations.

    • Safely operate, maintain and demonstrate the use of specialized nursing lab equipment including IV pumps, suctions, simulation equipment and related supplies and materials.

    • Provide effective instructional support to faculty and guidance to students on the use of nursing lab equipment.

    • Diagnose, manage and troubleshoot faults in simulation and audio-video technology.

    • Collaborate with vendors to troubleshoot equipment and system problems.

    • Implement hardware and software updates.

    • Contribute to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.

    • Maintain the confidentiality of department and student records and information.

    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

    • Operate a computer and use standard business software.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.
