    Starting Salary Range: $36,571 to $66,141 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the Children's Center Teacher Salary Schedule is step 9. This categorically-funded position pursuant to Ed Code 87470 is scheduled to begin on August 13, 2025, with three (3) additional professional development days to be arranged.

    About the Department & Center: The Cabrillo College Children's Center functions as the demonstration lab school program for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Department. The Center also serves as campus child care for student families, as well as community members for children six (6) months old through five (5) years.
    Children's Center staff members are part of a collaborative teaching team with the ECE faculty, families, and adult ECE students. The philosophy of the Center embeds the principals from the National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC), and emphasizes a developmentally-based curriculum with a commitment to anti-bias principles. The Center supports and nurtures the well-being of all families living in a diverse society. Staffing reflects the belief that an optimal learning and caregiving environment for children includes a team of people who are diverse in many ways, including ethnicity, languages spoken, family life and community. The Center receives its primary funding from and adheres to the Title 5/22 regulations from the California Department of Education-Early Education Division, the California Department of Social Services-Child Development Division and the U.S. Department of Education.

    Examples of Duties


    • Demonstrating professionalism and continuous learning as an early educator related to center and department goals
    • Facilitating a high-quality and inclusive classroom learning environment that supports the developmental stages of infants, toddlers, preschool age and children with disabilities, based on the center's philosophy and goals
    • Implementing Title 22 regulations under the guidelines of the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing for all aspects of Health, Safety & Nutrition
    • Implementing Title 5 standards and best practices under the guidelines of the California Department of Education, Early Education Program
    • Addressing all aspects of culture, language, diversity & equity within the classroom environment
    • Building effective relationships and communicating well with students and families of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including adult students with disabilities
    • Developing and implementing curriculum reflecting diversity and the anti-bias approach
    • Understanding the role of play-based curriculum in children's learning and development
    • Implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the practice of ECE theorists, NAEYC Standards and the California Department of Education Guidelines and Foundations for Early Learning
    • Observing and assessing children's development through the use of the authentic assessment approach, cycle of inquiry, DRDP Developmental Profile, ASQ-Ages & Stages Questionnaire, learning stories and other relevant forms of documentation
    • Implementing curriculum based on the essential school readiness domains specifically in areas of social-emotional development, language & literacy, cognitive development, physical well-being, and motor development and approaches to learning
    • Working closely with ECE faculty in the supervision and mentoring of student teachers and interns/apprentices, while working with young children in the lab school setting
    • Planning and facilitating activities that support family partnerships including (monthly meetings, conferences, special functions, community resource support and other general systems to ensure family success)
    • Maintaining an organized and safe classroom classroom & office environment
    • Ordering and purchasing curriculum materials and supplies, which may require driving to local vendors
    • Meeting regularly with the Director and ECE faculty to discuss needs of children, families, curriculum development, and ECE students
    • May provide bilingual services to monolingual and limited English-speaking program participants
    • Participating in campus and community events related to early care and education, which may include evening or off-campus activities
    • Participating in campus and community governance committees, and processes
    • Maintaining timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
    • Participating in required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation
    • Demonstrating sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, staff, and families
    • Completing required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.
    • Attending and actively participating in regular faculty meetings and campus-wide committee functions

    Minimum Qualifications


    Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications in one of the three disciplines listed below:


    Child Development/ Early Childhood Education
    • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty, and staff AND
    • Master's in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR
    • Bachelor's in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education AND Master's in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR
    • The *equivalent


    Parent Education: Noncredit
    • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty, and staff AND
    • Bachelor's degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development or early childhood education, educational psychology with a specialization in child development, elementary education, psychology, or family life studies AND two (2) years of professional experience in early childhood programs or parenting education OR
    • The *equivalent

    Vocational (short term): Noncredit
    • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty, and staff AND
    • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of occupational experience in early childhood programs or parenting education OR
    • Associate degree AND six (6) years of occupational experience in early childhood programs or parenting education OR
    • Possession of a full-time, current, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the subject OR
    • For courses in an occupation for which the district offers or has offered apprenticeship instruction, the minimum qualifications for noncredit apprenticeship instructors in that occupation, as specified in Title 5 section 53413 AND two (2) years of professional experience in early childhood programs or parenting education OR
    • The *equivalent

    • Evidence of professional activities, certifications and community service work beyond primary teaching assignments
    • Demonstrated ability of implementing effective time management skills to meet program outcomes
    • Ability to effectively multi-task and handle a wide variety of challenges and concerns using appropriate problem-solving skills
    • Awareness of community and campus resources that provide support to Center families with varying needs (counseling, health, food, housing, employment, parenting, and other areas that impact families' success)
    • Demonstrated ability to plan high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum and effectively teach content related to the age group of employment placement. (A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview)
    • Ability to effectively mentor adult ECE students in their practicum experience and facilitate appropriate trainings to support their professional competencies
    • Effectively collaborate with ECE Faculty and Program Director on supporting adult students to successfully complete their practicum experience
    • Ability to lead a group of regular classroom staff, ECE practicum students and ECE Interns/Apprentices.
    • Perform all duties effectively as described in the responsibilities above



    Required Discipline Specific Requirements/Licensure:
    • Possession of, or be eligible for, the California Child Development Permit at the Site Supervisor OR Director Level, AND
    • Completion of six (6) Early Childhood Education (ECE) Administration Units, AND two (2) ECE units in Adult Supervision.
      • May be enrolled at the time of application.



    Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
    • Spanish/English Bilingual and Biliterate skills (oral & written)
    • Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies
    • Special training/certification, coursework and/or teaching experience in infant/toddler programs OR special training/certification, coursework and/or teaching experience in preschool programs
    • Successful teaching experience in a Title 5 state funded early education program
    • Successful teaching and mentoring experience in a campus lab school setting
    • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment
