The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time  Director of Development (Foundation) in the Foundation office.

College of the Canyons is part of the Santa Clarita Community College District and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), enrolling approximately 32,000 students each academic year. For more than 40 years, College of the Canyons has provided the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley with access to high quality education and training. College of the Canyons is dedicated to being a leading two-year college, recognized locally, regionally, statewide and nationally for technical advancement, institutional effectiveness, student support, model academic and professional programs, excellence in teaching and learning, fostering a broad range of community partnerships, maximizing student access, and for the sense of community that we provide to our students and staff.

 The College of the Canyons Foundation was established in 1987 as the College’s 501(c)(3) non-profit auxiliary organization formed to raise philanthropic support for College of the Canyons. Since its inception, the Foundation has:

  • Raised more than $30 million over the last 28 years to support programs and students;
  • Established more than 220 scholarships that are awarded annually;
  • Raised more than $5 million toward the University Center and Culinary Arts Capital Campaigns;
  • Raised more than $1 million for endowed scholarships through the Bernard Osher Foundation initiative;
  • Granted more than $300,000 over the last ten years for mini-grants to fund innovative projects and academic programs;
  • Established the Alumni and Athletic Halls of Fame;
  • Established endowments for the Arts, the Library and the Athletic Track; and
  • Co-founded the Santa Clarita Valley Nonprofit Leadership Network that serves more than 100 local nonprofit organizations and agencies.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to and under the direction of the Foundation Executive Director, the Development Director performs a variety of responsible and complex duties related to the management, operation, and activities/services of the College of the Canyons Foundation, particularly serving as a frontline fundraiser with a focus on raising support through individual, planned giving, and corporate giving. The Director provides leadership through partnering with the other foundation staff members, coordinating and organizing a variety of activities related to supporting the philanthropic efforts of the college. The Director also coordinates, develops and updates prospect listings, donor strategies, and recognition opportunities; identifies, cultivates prospects, stewards donors, and provides programmatic support for fundraising efforts that are deemed Foundation priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

  1. Works in collaboration with other members of the Foundation staff, committee chairs, and Foundation Directors.
  2. Provides oversight and leadership on Foundation fundraising needs, including setting revenue and expense goals.
  3. Responsible for regular committee and Board meeting attendance; frequently arranges donor visits, meetings, and contacts.
  4. Ensures timely filing of contact reports; and other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
  5. Develops and assists with successful strategies for annual giving, alumni outreach, major gift solicitations and planned giving.
  6. Identifies and recruits key volunteers whose focus is development.
  7. Supervises and provides work direction to volunteers, student college assistants, and any staff as deemed necessary who perform general office and development campaign tasks.
  8. Participates in gift solicitations; formulates prospect strategies and directs identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition activities.
  9. Provides regular communication to supervisor regarding progress of fund development activities.
  10. Makes visits with selected officers and college officials as directed.
  11. Prepares materials for routine prospect review sessions.
  12. Produces materials including annual reports, donor letters, newsletters, invitations, brochures, etc.
  13. Prepares and deliver speeches and presentations to community organizations, campus groups, business groups and boards, to develop institutional support, raise the college’s profile, and cultivate new relationships. 
  1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Experience

Three (3) years of full-time equivalent progressively responsible experience and demonstrated success in fundraising with at least two (2) years in a management or supervisory capacity.   

 

Education

Equivalent to an Associate’s Degree (60 semester units) required from an accredited college or university.  Bachelor’s Degree desirable.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of:

  • How to organize and develop a fundraising plan.
  • External funding sources.
  • Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to fundraising and development.
  • Fundraising technologies; e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Blackbaud experience desirable. 

 Ability to: 

  • Work as part of the Foundation and larger college administrative team.
  • Exhibit leadership skills in carrying out daily responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of staff, students and donors.

SALARY PLACEMENT

This twelve (12) month per year position will be on an individual contract. This classified administrator position will be placed on Range 8 of the Administrator Salary Schedule. Step placement is based on experience. Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($7,078 / $7,184 / $7,292 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

All administrators are on an employment contract and exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation.

DISTRICT CLASSIFIED ADMINISTRATIVE BENEFITS

Full-time employees are provided with a diversified employee benefits program that includes sick time, vacation time, discretionary time, medical, dental and vision insurance including dependent coverage, disability and life insurance as well as Section 125 options.  These benefits commence on the first of the month following date of hire.  Professional development and educational incentive opportunities are provided to all classified administrative employees.  

Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and related equipment; repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting/turning, bending at the waist, and reaching in awkward positions; frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; moderately lifting heavy materials weighing up to 35 pounds; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed material and computer monitor; handling and working with various materials and objects; intermittent exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; and travel from site-to-site. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency service workers.
