COMMUNITY  SAILING and/or POWER BOATING INSTRUCTOR
Part-time position teaching beginning and intermediate Sailing or Power boating to students in community boating classes. Applicants  should be competent boaters comfortable in all conditions, have an excellent sense of public and customer relations, be able to manage groups of 8-12 adults or youth, perform boat rescues/tows and provide on-the-water instruction from a 15' whaler. Certification as a US Sailing Instructor and previous teaching experience preferred. Duties include classroom and water-based instruction, operation of safety boats, ensuring safety and supervision of on the water activities, manage registrations and paperwork. Must be able to work weekends.
Pre-employment drug testing required. Excellent pay, respectful work environment.

  • A passion for sailing and working with sailors of all ages
  • Experience and ability to provide a safe and sportsmanlike environment for all sailors on and off the water.
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Customer service focused
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Experience operating small powerboats
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • US Sailing/US Powerboating Instructor Certification preferred, or ability to obtain
  • USCG license required for Powerboat Instructor applicants.
  • Lifeguard certification is a bonus.

Conditions of Employment

This is a professional expert position.  The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 am – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  However, some flexibility such as evenings and weekends will be required to meet the needs of the department.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  1. Lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
  2. Work requires walking, standing on feet for prolonged periods and good manual dexterity to step on and off boats.
  3. Employees are expected to work in hot and cold temperature extremes.
  4. Employees may also be required to have skin contact with detergents, abrasives, cleaning solvents and disinfectants.
  5. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
