Speech Communication Instructor (Full-time tenure track to begin instruction Fall 2026)



POSITION SUMMARY
This 10-month (175 days), full-time tenure track assignment may include instruction in a variety of Speech Communications courses. The assignment and schedule, as determined by the District, may consist of day and/or evening classes.

Classes are offered on a 16-week calendar (fall and spring semesters), as well as in a variety of non-traditional scheduling options: winter intersession, evenings, summer sessions, and optional class formats, such as online education courses.

This position is contingent upon funding and final Board approval.

Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

- Demonstrates sensitivity to, understanding of, and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, immigrant status, and cultural background of community college students, faculty, and staff; and successfully fosters and supports an inclusive educational and work environment; AND
- Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication
OR
- Bachelor's in any of the above
AND
- Master's in drama / theater arts, mass communication or English
OR
- The equivalent

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching high-quality Speech Communication courses such as Argumentation and Debate, Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Public Speaking with preferred focus on Argumentation and Debate in a community college or comparable post-secondary environment.
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with Forensics (Speech and Debate).
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with facilitating on-campus speech events.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity-minded, inclusive, and culturally responsive teaching practices, including the integration of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles into curriculum design, instruction, and assessment.
- Experience working effectively with students from diverse cultural, linguistic, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including first-generation students and students with disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to actively collaborate in department, division, and college committees, shared governance, and other service activities appropriate for tenure-track faculty.
- Experience with or strong interest in curriculum development and revision, including course and program development aligned with transfer, general education, and institutional goals.
- Experience with or interest in participating in program review, student learning outcomes assessment, and the use of data to inform instructional improvement and departmental goals and resource planning.

Salary Range: Salary to be determined by the candidate's proper placement on the current Faculty Salary Schedule, which is based on education and experience, and can be found at the Citrus College website. Maximum placement for newly hired instructor is Step 7.
Pay Rate: To be determined by the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Examples of essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach Speech Communication courses in a variety of modalities to a diverse student population in accordance with the course outlines, and maintain required office hours. Courses include, but are not limited to, Introduction to Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Argumentation and Debate.
- Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, and college committees.
- Engage in professional learning opportunities.
- Participate in the development, revision, and assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Participate in the Program Review process.
- Maintain necessary attendance and student records and submit them in accordance with published deadlines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Evidence of computer literacy.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with a diverse population.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of the instructional team.

SELECTION PROCESS
- A selection committee will review application packages of those candidates who have met the minimum qualifications for this position and will select a limited number of qualified candidates for an interview.
- Each candidate may be asked to deliver a presentation on a topic of the selection committee's choice. The candidate will be informed of the topic when an interview appointment is scheduled.
- Each candidate may be asked to complete a writing prompt just prior to the interview.
- Travel costs must be borne by the applicant.
- Final candidates for faculty, management, and supervisor/confidential positions may be interviewed by the Superintendent/President.
- If selected as a finalist, the candidate permits the District to contact current and former employer(s) to investigate employment history.
